Have you heard of Korean Beauty? It has taken the world by storm. Why is Korean beauty so popular? What is all the fuss about? What are the must have K Beauty products? More importantly, Where can I buy Korean Beauty Products from in South Africa?

Koreans are known for their perfect looking “glass’ skin (gleaming complexion). Their skin is clear, smooth and appears to have no pores.

Korean skincare focuses on prevention and getting to the root of the skincare issue. They are taught from a young age to be consistent with their routines and that makes all the difference. Slow and steady wins the race. At a young age they start to apply SPF and antioxidants before the wrinkles appear. They focus on skincare and makeup takes a back seat.

Korean Beauty: what is the fuss about?

From my own experience, I can say that it is popular because it works! Korean Beauty products are not harsh and they are also suitable for sensitive skin. They are of high quality and have some of the most fun packaging. They favour natural ingredients called phytochemicals. They are reasonably priced. Their efficacy can be compared to high end products. I tend to favour them and reach for them more often than their western counterparts.

A good option to try is the starter kit from Shop Glow Theory. It contains few of the bestsellers. This gives you a chance to test a few products before committing to a pricer full size. It’s also a great option for travelling. Clear winners for me are the Banilla Clean it zero cleansing balm, the Cosrx low ph cleansing gel and the Hemish Bulgarian rose eye masks.

K BEAUTY 10 STEP ROUTINE

This may be a myth created by American marketing companies. For Korean women, their routine is centered around assessing their skin and then caring for it as required. If your skin is dull you may use revitalising ginseng mask or vitamin c serum. If your skin is dry you may opt for a hyaluronic acid mask/serum.

The 10 step routine is there for you to know and to have at your disposal.  4-5 steps maybe enough. Eg. Exfoliation and  a sheet mask may be used twice a week. Products are layered as follows:

Oil/Balm cleanser –  remove makeup and oil based impurities

Gel/foam cleanser – water based

Exfoliation – Mostly AHA/BHA toner

Toner – regulates ph

Essence – penetrate deeper

Serum/Ampoule

Sheet Mask

Eye cream

Moisturiser

SIMPLIFY K BEAUTY

It doesn’t need to be complicated, time consuming and expensive. You need to use the right product for your skin type, and in the correct order. Lightest to heaviest.

K Beauty is known for its layering of products – This allows the skin to breathe and avoids clogging the pores – rather than relying on one thick cream. You can start by using the products that you already have. Mix and match according to your concern.

KOREAN BEAUTY STOCKISTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

We are fortunate that more and more online shops are bringing the Korean Beauty products to South Africa. Here is a list of K Beauty Stores that I myself have purchased from.
