Cleansing is the first and possibly the most underrated step in our skincare routine. You could be using the most effective or expensive serum or cream BUT if you are not cleansing properly – the residual dirt or makeup could be preventing the rest of your routine from working effectively or not at all.
We all know how to wash our face. But here are some expert tips and secrets to cleanse effectively.
TYPES OF CLEANSERS
You may have heard of the term DOUBLE CLEANSING. It involves using an oil based cleanser first – to remove makeup and dirt , followed by a water based cleanser.
It is very important to use the correct type of cleanser according to your skin type.
Micellar: dry/sensitive skin – make sure to rinse with water afterwards
Gel: oily/combo skin – my favourite type
Foam: oily/combo skin – May dry your skin out
Cream– dry/sensitive skin
Oil– most skin types – very good at removing makeup
Tie up your hair, or keep it away from your face- to make sure that you wash properly up to the hairline.
Wash your hands well before washing your face.
Wet your face with warm or cool water. Hot water is a no no. Hot water can be harsh for sensitive skin and skin prone to pigmentation.
Use gentle massage to apply the cleanser all over the face and neck. Do not neglect your neck. It is one of the first places to show any signs of aging.
Do not leave your cleanser on your skin for longer than 60 seconds. Leaving it on your face for an extended period of time will not result in cleaner skin but will actually damage your skin barier.
Wipe your face with a clean cloth or tissue. This step is often underestimated. Do not use the towel that you use for drying the rest of your body to wipe your face. This will prevent breakouts. I like using facial tissues on my face to dry it. A face towel used only for this purpose is a also a good idea.
Do not rub your face harshly with your chosen towel or face cloth. Pat your tissue or towel gently on your face to dry it.
Use toner on a cotton pad to remove excess dirt and makeup. Most people feel that applying toner is an unnecessary step. I personally see a positive difference when I use a toner. The trick is to apply it on a cotton pad and then gently sweep the pad across your face and neck. You will actually see the residual dirt left on the cotton pad.
If you have dehydrated or dry skin- do not dry your face with a tissue or cloth. Apply your toner to your wet or damp face. This may help the products that you apply next to penetrate deeper. It may also help to lock in moisture especially if you are using a product with hylaronic acid next.
Don’t forget to exfoliate at least once or twice a week. Exfoliating is essential for removing a build up of dead skin cells. This is vital for preventing dull looking skin
Morning: I use a gel cleanser only. my favourites include Cosrx Low Ph Cleanser and Nirvana Natural Bliss,
Evening: I double cleanse with a cleansing balm -> followed by a gel cleanser. this is effective in removing makeup as explained above. some of my favourites include : Banila Clean it Zero Cleansing Balm, The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing oil.
Pigmentation and uneven skin tone has plagued me for a long time. I am prone to having dark circles, and a “dark chin’’ as most brown people are. This may be due to hormonal imbalances and damage from the sun. (I blame standing in long assembly lines facing the sun during-my schooling career- we didn’t know about spf yet)
Naturally I jumped at the idea when I was contacted by Dermoprof to test their 3 step skincare system. It promises even skin tone and a brighter complexion. What’s not to love?
PIGMENTO B SYSTEM
I received a pack of the Pigmento B Cleanser, booster serum and cream.
The cleanser claims to invigorate tired and dull looking skin .
The Booster serum claims to control sun induced uneven tone / dark marks.
The cream claims to improve and manage uneven-toned skin / dark marks.
I could do with the help with all of the above! Read on to see if these products live up to these claims.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ingredient list. If you follow me on instagram you will know how particular I am about skincare ingredients. The most EXCITING ingredient that screams out to me are TRANEXAMIC ACID and NIACINAMIDE.
The rest of the world is only waking up to the wonders of this ingredient NOW. While DERMOPROF has carefully chosen this ingredient YEARS ago! It is a miracle ingredient for TREATING AND PREVENTING dark spots, pigmentation, melasma, uneven skin tone. WOW indeed. The fact that it is listed high up on the ingredient list, means that it is one of the main ingredients.
The good news is that it is safe to use for all skin types and all skin colors. It works at treating and preventing pigmentation on the surface as well as in the epidermis. It also calms the skin and helps to restore the skin barrier.
Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, improves skin barrier, minimises the appearance of pores, reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Also very beneficial for those suffering from acne. While vitamin C is very popular for brightening however it can be very irritating. Niacinamide is more suitable for all skin types.
Other notable and equally impressive ingredients include:
MANDELIC ACID: accelerates skin turnover thereby helping to remove dead skin that will otherwise lead to a dull complexion.
GERANIUM OIL: anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, tightens the skin, promotes the regeneration of new skin.
GREEN TEA EXTRACT: antioxidant, skin soothing, improves the appearance of sun damaged skin.
LINOLEIC ACID: keeps the skin barrier intact. It keeps water in and irritants out, reduces acne breakouts.
It is recommended that the DERMOPROF system be used on its own, and not in conjunction with other skincare products. This is because the other products may interfere with the efficacy of the ingredients.
I must admit that I felt apprehensive about giving up my trusted skincare regimen to try this skincare system. My skin was finally doing so well: even skin tone, no breakouts. I also see my skincare routine as selfcare. I was not sure how to feel about a shorter routine.
The thought of the pigmentation around my chin and neck clearing encouraged me.
I noticed by applying the cleanser to my wet hands , lathering my hands first and then applying it to my face worked better. I was able to create a more satisfying lather. I still miss my toner, especially after removing my makeup.
The face cleanser feels nourishing and not drying at all. After lathering it feels more like a cream cleanser.
The serum feels like a thick gel.
The moisturiser is also very nourishing. It applies and absorbs quickly. A little goes a long way.
Note: when trying out new skincare – it will take a few days for your skin to adjust to the texture of the new produts.
Skincare is a slow game. It takes a few weeks to see results. I was very impressed with the ingredient list. My skin is noticeably brighter and more even toned. I am receiving more compliments about my skin! I am very pleased with using these products.
Products that contain TRANEXAMIC ACID and NIACINAMIDE are usually available only at pricey medical aesthetic stores. Only one VERY expensive brand is available which retails for over R1500.
Thank you Dermoprof for keeping the average woman in mind. Thank you for bring EFFECTIVE and AFFORDABLE products of the highest QAULITY. The cleanser and cream is sold as a duo R380. The booster serum is sold separetly R280. I highly recommend getting all 3 products if you are looking for the best results.

I love supporting local brands. Dermoprof is made in South Africa.
There is a 50% SALE currently on their website. It is a STEAL. They are delivering during lockdown. Now is the best time to invest in a clearer and brighter complexion.
Ps. Get ready for the compliments coming your way. I’ve been asked if I bought a new foundation, if I have been for a facial, I’ve been told that my skin is glowing and so on.
#gifted. Although the product was gifted to me, my experience is true. The ingredients are scientifically proven to work. Head to my instagram post to look at the before and after pictures to decide for yourself.
Nothing can be quite as comforting to a girl on her period as a hot water bottle and her bed. But very few of us have the luxury of lying cosy in bed on these painful days that haunt us once a month.
Hot water bottles have evolved to microwavable wheat bags and pug-in heat pads and now stick on heat patches.
These patches seem to be the ULTIMATE in convenience and quick relief!
You can’t exactly carry your hot water bottle to work or school. Taking painkillers comes with its own side effects. If this product works it could be the saving grace for a lot of women!
Pros: convenient, no side effects, drug-free, ambulant, discreet.
The ultimate question is: DOES IT WORK?
Deep Heat claims that the patch provides deep penetrating heat therapy from muscular and menstrual pain for up to 12 hours.
It is available at most Pharmacy and grocery stores for R55 for 3 patches. That works out to roughly R20 a patch.
As you may already know that I am living with stage 4 endometriosis. Read my journey here.Pain and discomfort is a usual occurrence in my life. I was naturally curious to try this out.
The major question is- does it do what it claims?
I love that it is thin and discreet. It sticks on easily and can be well hidden under clothes.
The patch warms up after 30 minutes of applying it. The level of warmth was soothing, It was not enough to warrant any effective pain relief. i still needed to take my regular painkillers. It was not as warm as I would have liked it to be.
It does work for the stipulated time of 12 hours which is very impressive. The soothing relief lasted for 12 hours. It definitely took the edge away in terms of the strong pain. this helps while you are waiting for the painkillers to work. if you suffer from mild period pain you may not need any painkillers.
The box contains 3 patches. I used and tested all 3 patches on different occasions when I experienced period pain.
About R20 for a single patch is quite expensive. I quite liked the idea of them, which is why I bought them in the first place. I didn’t find them to be particularly beneficial. I actually prefer applying a gel containing an anti-inflammatory eg. diclofenac / ibuprofen.
I suggest that you try this period pain patch if you suffer from mild to moderate period pain. I am quite sure that it will help you. I suffer from very severe period pain and therefore it was not very effective for me.
This will be particularly useful for teenage girls to use while attending school. If you want an alternative to painkillers for younger girls this is it!
